Things I ask myself at work

- How exactly does one collect food? I mean, in the limited edition, save-it-for-my-grandchildren type way. In my store, ads frequently come over the intercom, and one is for the "new, special limited edition collecter's teas from the Republic of Tea! Try all 5 new flavors inspired by the artist Jerry Garcia! Hurry now, and don't forget that they're the collecter's editions!"
(By the way, Jerry Garcia really must be a branding whore... didn't he already sell himself to Ben and Jerry's for a pint of ice cream?)

And:

- Just how stupid are people nowadays? (I ask myself this one a lot). I asked it this weekend for 2 reasons: 1, I ran across a small grill that we carry, and the box contained the caveat "does not contain food." I really, really wonder about the person who inspired that warning: "hey [grill company], I am suing you for false advertising because this box had a picture of the grill with meat and corn on it, but it doesn't come with meat OR corn! I was mislead!"
2nd reason, a bit more subtle: We just received new display mats for the registers that detail our return and alchohol sale policies. In regards to the alchohol, it proudly states, "We Check ID's." I see that error so many places, it's ridiculous. I feel the need to start an orginization a la SADD: SAMA-- Students Against the Misuse of Apostrophes. Either that, or a PSA campaign. Move over, NBC's "The More You Know," here comes the Grammar Police!

Got this from pressdbtwnpages, and since iTunes would rule my life if left to its own intentions, I thought I'd give it a try:

Put your iTunes on shuffle.
Say the following questions aloud, and press play.
Use the song title as the answer to the question.
NO CHEATIN'

1. How does the world see you?
Half Man - Bill Cosby, "I Started Out as a Child"
--Wow, I didn't think I had that much facial hair.

2. Will I have a happy life?
Have Fun, Go Mad - Blair "Sliding Doors" ST
--Cool.

3. What do my friends think of me?
Beethoven's 9th, techno remix.
-- Well, the chorus is all about joy and brotherhood, so I'll take it as a positive.

4. Do people secretly lust after me?
Scotch and Chocolate - Nickel Creek, "Why Should the Fire Die?"
-- It's instrumental. But people definitely lust after scotch and chocolate, either together or separately, so I guess I'm covered. Or they want to eat me.

5. How can I make myself happy?
I Will Always Love You - Whitney Huston, "The Bodyguard" ST (It's a good ST, shut up).
--Fall in love with someone I can't be with. Got it.

6. What should I do with my life?
Angel - Sarah McLachlan (what, 2 sappy songs in a row? Come on, shuffle).
--"Spend all [my] time waiting for that second chance... maybe I'll find some peace tonight in the arms of an angel." I'll keep that one in mind.

7. Will I ever have children?
Strangers in the Night - Frank Sinatra.
--HA! I think that is a resounding yes.

8. What is some good advice for me?
Smile Please - Stevie Wonder, "Fulfillingness' First Finale"
--Simple enough.

9. How will I be remembered?
My December - Josh Groban, "Closer"
--A mediocre cover of a great song. Aww...

10. What's my signature dancing song?
Wonder - Earthsuit, "Kalidescope Superior". (wow, haven't heard this one in awhile)
--I'll take it; people definitely stare in wonder (or something like) at my moooves.

11. What's my current themesong?
Forecast - Jason Mraz "Mr. A-Z."
--Wow, couldn't be more wrong. Sexy lovesong from guy to girl; bitter irony, that one is.

12. What do others think is my current themesong?
Summer Wind - Frank Sinatra (again?)
--Another lovesong, but about love that left with the summer. That could work.

13. What shall they play at my funeral?
My Bill - Showboat, by way of Audra McDonald
--About a man the singer loves inspite of him being sort of average. That's sweet... I think.

14. What type of men do I like?
Your Fault - Into The Woods OBC
--Great.

15. How's my love life?
More than a Woman - BeeGees
--Way to rub it in, iTunes.

I rather like this one.

I finally have a real live part-time job at the Cost Plus World market in the Village at Orange. Meaning I'll be slightly richer than I am now; that is, until I use my shiny employee discount on all the amazing furnishings and international food and spend all my paycheck.

In other news, Carol Channing came to Chapman yesterday and gave a performance of her one woman show in honor of she and her husband setting up a scholarship fund here for Theater students. Chapman students got free tickets, so I went and had a really good time. The woman is funny! and at 86 can still move around and sing like she's 25 years younger. She did impressions of Tallulah Bankhead, Sophie Cook, etc, sang the songs she made famous, and pretty much just brought down the house. Then I finally saw Good Night and Good Luck with some friends, but was so exhausted by that time of night that I fell asleep during the last part... I guess I'll have to rent it to see what I missed. Slightly embarassing, that. I very much enjoyed what I did see, though... it's a really beautifully shot movie that pulls no punches and doesn't have the posturing and self-importance that so many historically-themed movies fall prey to.

The 24 hour countdown has begun for my first-ever international trip, and all I can think about is, "what if I forget my passport?" Heh... I love traveling, but this is the big leagues now. My friend Kristin is driving down from Sacramento to spend the night and then we're giving her a ride to the airport, so I guess we can be irrationally worried together.

I never thought my first trip abroad would be to Greece; I always imagined something typical, like England or France would be first. Not that I'm complaining or anything... ;)

I've been asking around for addresses the past few days because I want to send postcards while I'm there, but if I haven't asked you and you want one, just e-mail me your address before tomorrow morning.

Have great weeks, and I'll see you all when I gat back (if the jet lag doesn't finish me first). =D

But I did go to Dennys with said roommate and talked in an English accent (that must have mutated 5 times in the process) for the whole meal. We were inspired my Hugh Laurie's completely awesome American accent on House, MD. Because Hugh Laurie is actually English.

Speaking of which, my love for that show knows no bounds. So much snark and good drama packed into one hour... and, I hardly ever use this word, but Robert Sean Leonard is hoooooooooooot.
The internet is down at my house, booo :(

I got a part in AmCel (musical revue in November to raise scholarship money)! And it's in the ensemble of "One Short Day" from Wicked, to boot. I am stoked!

We also finally found out what opera we're doing this year. The director landed on The Magic Flute, and I am playing the 2nd Lady. Not exactly the part I wanted, but the other 2 Ladies and I get some killer trios and quintets with other characters, and it's my first full-length opera, so I'm excited for this too:)

Finally, I got hired for a caroling group this Christmas! I get to dress up in Dicken's costumes, sing carols (which I love anyway, no matter how much I hear them) and get paid for it. Nice Christmas bonus.

I just hope I don't die from The Busy, now. Heh.

I wish that I worked somewhere cool!

My roommate works as a hostess at Catal/ the Uva Bar, a very nice restaurant in the middle of Downtown Disney. And yesterday, she sat Eric McCormak (sp), who plays Will on Will and Grace.

She came home last night and gave me and our other housemate a blow-by-blow account of it all. He came in with his wife and his son, dressed as Peter Pan (thus my subject heading :)), and she kept her cool and everything when the other workers (like their server) kinda fumbled a lot. My roommate is so cool :)

And when she told a mutual guy friend of ours what happened, he got all excited and yelled across his apt to his roommate what happened, and his response was "aw man, you mean he really isn't gay?" (the roommate happens to be gay as well). Haha, I have such odd friends :)

I have the weirdest.living.situation.ever! Details at 11, or whenever I get to an internet-equipped computer again ;)

In other news, Jake Heggie is coming here in the spring and working with students on his songs! Now, I don't know if "here" means SoCal, or to Chapman, or what have you, but this is incredible. I hope I get to sing for him. Also, somehow we got Barbara Bonney to come and give a master class in German lied this spring too. This is just too much... :D

For The Record: A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia. A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one. A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions. You scored better than half in all Nerd, earning you the title of: Pure Nerd. The times, they are a-changing. It used to be that being exceptionally smart led to being unpopular, which would ultimately lead to picking up all of the traits and tendences associated with the "dork." No-longer. Being smart isn't as socially crippling as it once was, and even more so as you get older: eventually being a Pure Nerd will likely be replaced with the following label: Purely Successful. Congratulations!
